As we now have a lithium system the split can no longer
be safely used so we have moved to a battery to battery charger
instead

Split charging system

As we are running a standard battery as the vans main battery and
AGM as the leisure I did not want the two automatically joined every
time the engine runs (as an auto system)
I decided to go with a more manual system so I can choose if I need
the boost or not
I fitted a AE8A RL180 Automotive Relay Black 100A 4 Pin Automotive
Relay - from Ebay
There is now a 100 amp relay fitted to join the main van
battery to the leisure batteries, this is not normally connected
(energised)
To link the main to the leisure batteries the van must running and
the red switch on the dash switched to on (down) - there is a built
in delay circuit so the relay pulls in after 15 seconds this is to
avoid high start current going through the relay.
When the batteries are low I have seen 40 amps charging, the issue
with a split charging system is that when the leisure battery get
more charge the charge rate slows considerably, in our case this is
not really an issue.
To get the leisure batteries fully charged a battery to
battery charger would work better, possibly something to look at in
the future.
